Kedarnath Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state of India. Kedarnath Temple in the lap of Himalayan Mountains in Uttarakhand is included in the twelve Jyotirlingas and is also one of the Char Dham [a] and Panch Kedar [b]. Due to the adverse climate here, this temple is open for darshan only between the months of April to November.This temple, made of stones in Katyuri style, is said to have been built by Maharaja Janmejay, the grandson of the Pandavas. The Swayambhu Shivalinga situated here is very ancient. Adi Shankaracharya got this temple renovated.


Kedarnath was the worst affected area due to flash floods and landslides in the Indian states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during June 2013. The houses around the temple were washed away.

A lot is said about who built the Kedarnath temple. From Pandavas to Adi Shankaracharya. Today's science suggests that the Kedarnath temple was probably built in the 8th century. Even if you say no, this temple has been in existence for at least 1200 years.

TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE

This temple is built on a six feet high square platform. The main part of the temple is the pavilion and circumambulation path around the sanctum sanctorum. Nandi is seated outside in the courtyard in the form of a bull vehicle. There is no authentic mention of who built the temple, it is said that this temple was renovated by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

The history of the establishment of this Jyotirlinga in brief is that the great ascetic Nar and Narayan Rishi, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, used to perform penance on the Kedar peak of the Himalayas. Pleased with his worship, Lord Shankar appeared and as per his prayer, granted him the boon of always residing in the form of Jyotirlinga. This place Kedarnath is situated on a peak named Kedar in the Himalayan mountain range.
